COLE IN THE AFTERNOON

Freddy Cole Quartet/Marcus Roberts Trio

At 3 p.m. March 31/Lucas Theatre

The title song to an album Freddy Cole cut in 1990 goes like this: "Now his name was Nat/And my name is Fred/Now, we look alike/So it's been said/But I'll stress a point to make you see/That I am not my brother, I'm me."

No, indeed. The great vocalist and jazz piano player Nat "King" Cole died in 1965, and by that point his younger sibling had already been to Julliard, received a Master's from the New England Conservatory of Music, cut a hit record ("Whispering Grass") and developed a rep as one of the hippest jazz pianists/Cabaret singers in New York and on the road. There's even been a documentary film about him, The Cole Nobody Knows. And yeah, he's Natalie Cole's uncle.

This sparkling jazz matinee features Cole and his quartet (Randy Napoleon, Elias Bailey, Curtis Boyd) doing that thing they do, and Florida's Marcus Roberts Trio playing a set of tunes from the Great American Songbook, which of course includes the great Cole Porter.

And there's how the SMF folks titled this one-off show. Get it?
