One of a growing brigade of tasty little places in and around the Victorian district, Sammy Green’s is in a quiet neighborhood just a stone’s throw from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
The clientele is mixed, and shifts by the hour: Sharply–dressed older locals who enjoy a tasty value, cool moms with their cool kids, and this being Savannah, the requisite quota of hipsters.
For the most part, one thing draws them all: the sliders, little morsels of heaven with quirky names but very down–home, hearty tastes.
Subdivided on the menu by meat — brisket (perfect!), pork (pulled, yum) and chicken (breast cutlet) — the sliders come out hot but not too hot, ready to eat instantly and be enjoyed in this colorful, very clean and well–kept little diner–esque restaurant.
The Cheeburger, of course a nod to the classic Belushi SNL skit, is a little hunk ‘o brisket with a smidgen of American cheese melted over it, some grilled onions and a little house sauce. (This is my second favorite.)
The Hogzilla, as you might expect, features pulled pork with slaw and just a hint of barbecue sauce.
The Buffalo — my own fave — is a spicy chicken patty with a tinge of Buffalo sauce and some blue cheese.
There are others as well, but those serve as my own holy trinity, with the church being so close at hand and all.
They offer awesome little hot dogs as well, and salads too. But the sliders remain Sammy Green’s core function. (Don’t fear, vegetarians: tofu can be substituted for any of the meats.)
To be fair, there has been some grumbling among the Sammy’s faithful at the recent deletion of their tasty tacos from the menu. I share their sense of mild dismay but this hasn’t kept me away.
The sliders are still a ridiculous bargain even though prices recently went up to $2.50 from $2. I actually felt guilty only paying two bucks apiece for these little beauties anyway. Support your sliders with the standard side, fries, or one from the rotating menu of sides, such as sweet potato fries or couscous.
You can finish up with a sweet or two as well, maybe a brownie. For $1!
Drinks are the standard soda fountain range, with a twist: You sweeten your own iced tea with that cool liquid sugar syrup stuff. I don’t know what you call it, but it’s pretty cool.
While there are no “waiters’ in the classic sense — you order your Cheeburgers and what not at the counter and pay first — your food is brought out from the kitchen to your table when ready, and your party will be checked on and asked if you’d like anything else.
While you enjoy your sliders, you can also enjoy the rockin’ tunes they’re usually playing.
Oh, and check this out: Sammy’s offers free delivery downtown now.
