Eric Culberson Blues Band

Perhaps the city’s most well-known blues guitarist and singer. He tours the East Coast and has released two internationally-acclaimed albums. Tues. (hosts Open Mic) - Wed., Mercury Lounge + Thurs., JJ Cagney’s.

Jacey Falk & His Revue

Local jazz singer Falk spent time in the New York scene before returning home. His backing group features seasoned players from both Savannah and Charleston, who work hard to follow his unpredictable and lighthearted leads. Fri. - Sat., 9 pm, Jazz’d Tapas Bar.

Fall of The Bastards

“Blackened Crust Thrash” (doesn’t that sound like a catch of the day at The Chart House?) from Portland, Oregon that should appeal to fans of grindcore and death metal as well. One critic says the band “retains the blasphemous attitude without sacrificing musicianship.” Mon., The Jinx.

Megan Garrison

This young local singer is just starting to make the leap form Open Mics to real gigs. She describes her style as “quiet, relaxing acoustic guitar entertainment." Fri., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.

Trae Gurley's Sinatra

Local thespian who’s found a niche putting his own live spin on Frank’s classics from his big band period, accompanied by pre-recorded tracks. Wed., 7 pm, Tango (Tybee) + Thurs., Jazz’d Tapas Bar.



Hazel Virtue

Slick and well-arranged modern alternative rock band that splits its time and members between Savannah and Charleston. Fronted by songwriter Eric Britt, the group straddles the line between radio-friendly guitar rock and genteel balladry that references their Southeastern roots. They play often at this small bar and have become one of its most popular attractions. Sat., O’Connell’s Irish Pub.

Popular country, rock and jam-oriented covers. Wed., 8 pm, The Oyster Bar (Wilmington Island).

The Knife Trade

This tight and powerful modern metalcore band from Athens (Georgia, not Ohio) formed a year ago, and although they claim that hometown fans sing along to their songs, I can’t even tell what their vocalist is saying, let alone dream of chiming in. Fri., The Jinx.

The Legendary J.C.’s

Orlando-based act with a strong Memphis R & B influence. They mix flat-out groove-heavy power rock with off-the-cuff soul vocals that aspire to the heights of Sam Cooke or James Carr. Sat., Locos Deli & Pub.

The Permanent Tourists

One of the more impressive and polished party bands around – playing soul, funk and rock hits. Fri. - Sat., The Oyster Bar (Wilmington Island).

Phantom Wingo

Loud, versatile and improv-prone rock with a soulful and bluesy edge. Formerly known as The No Exit Band featuring Ronnie Keel. Thurs., Savannah Blues.

Pretty Shady Chicken

Up-and-coming local jam band that is not afraid to stretch way out and bring elements of psychedelic music and jazz into their limber song structures (with more than a passing resemblance to Phish). Fri., Locos Deli & Pub.

The Redbelly Band

Solid and energetic Atlanta-based jam group that’s a favorite of this venue. If you don’t dig on wah pedals, sit this one out. Fri., O’Connell’s Irish Pub.

The Republican’ts

Punkish power-pop trio from Lincoln, Nebraska (home of Matthew Sweet) that relocated to Anderson, South Carolina (home of Skin Thrasher’s famous hot dogs). Short, sharp Ramone-y songs that play up melody and attitude over flash and soloing. Sat., The Jinx.

Roy & The Circuit Breakers

Pop and rock hits from a local duo using sequenced backing. Fri. - Sat., Scandals (Tybee).

ScullSoup

Hard-hitting thrash/metal act from Greene County, Tennessee that’s been around for well over a decade and gets a lot of mileage out of anti-hippie anthems. Kind of like a cross between The Swamp Zombies (remember them?) and D.R.I. Sat., The Jinx.

Charlie Sherrill

Longtime house act at this well-known Tybee Island bar, who plays danceable pop mixed with light jazz, reggae and calypso. He terms this “Tybee Music,” and has released a couple of indie CDs filled with original tunes celebrating the lazy life of a South Georgia beachcomber. Wed. - Sun., Doc’s Bar (Tybee).

Skeleton Witch

Kickass melodic death metal from Athens (Ohio, not Georgia) that mixes up seemingly incongruous influences (like the demonic rasp of At The Gates and early ‘80s straight-up San Francisco speed metal). Their frenzied, Slayer-esque speed riffing and ferocious drumming is fairly amazing, especially considering they don’t lean on downtuning and gimmicky effects pedals. Recommended if you appreciate Overkill, Sepultura and yes, even King Diamond. Fri., The Jinx.

Spitfire Poetry Group

This local association of spoken word artists and enthusiasts has become perhaps the most noteworthy organization of its type in town, and their events seem to bring out many of the more serious local poets. This Open Mic starts at 5 pm, with a segment geared toward kids and teenagers. Then, at 8 pm, things heat up with an adult-oriented exhibition of verbal skills. Sat., The Sentient Bean.



Amy Steinberg

Bawdy, uninhibited female songwriter from Orlando, who’s been compared to Bette Midler and Ani DiFranco. She’s known for raucous and ribald live shows with plenty of crowd interaction. Thurs., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.

Two Blue

Simple, unvarnished city blues with plenty of harp (a la Sonny Boy Williamson or Little Walter). Plus a few originals as well. Fri. - Sat., 9 pm, Mercury Lounge.



Uncle Sam’s Medicine Kabinet

Local acoustic trio (featuring guitar and banjo) based around frontman Jason Bible’s originals and folk and blues covers played with a loose demeanor. Thurs., Locos Deli & Pub.
