Allison Cornell
This singer/songwriter boasts a Masters from Julliard, but paid her dues backing up such iconic artists as Joe Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benatar, Tracy Chapman, Angelo Badalamenti and Shania Twain. Her own work veers from jazzy pop to contemporary folk, plus a healthy dose of sequenced, world music-inspired dance club electronica. 1st Friday For Folk Music
Family oriented (smoke and alcohol free) acoustic coffeehouse-style showcase of national, regional and local talent. This month’s installment includes “Gainesville, Fl.’s Joni Mitchell,” Marce, a native of Colombia, who’s been composing and performing original material on keyboard and guitar from the age of 9. Also appearing: the duo of Rebecca Hall (guitar) and Ken Anderson (bass and harmonica), who’ve earned raves from Sing Out! Magazine and Byrds frontman Roger McGuinn for their uncannily retro-sounding originals and “eerie vocal perfection”; and local multi-instrumentalist duo Bob & Judy Williams, co-founders of the Savannah Folk Music Society, who now perform under the name Cynergy. David Lugo & Latin Jazz Motion
Led by a percussionist with 3 decades of professional experience, this up-and-coming regional combo (piano, bass, trumpet, percussion) plays Latin and jazz standards (think Tito Puenté, Antonio Carlos Jobim, etc...), plus originals. Lugo’s background includes work with everyone from Jaco Pastorious to Ruben Blades. Fri., 10 pm, Savannah Down under.
Modern Skirts
Currently one of the hottest original rock bands in Athens, this intriguing group relies on clever pop hooks and adventurous vocal arrangements rather than screaming guitars. The Prodigal Sunz
This spin-off from local club act The Train Wrecks finds that group’s rhythm section of bassist Eric Dunn and drummer/guitarist Markus Kuhlmann joined by The Savannah Soul Project’s guitarist Justin Boykin for an all-cover set featuring tunes by Jeff Buckley, Radiohead and Marvin Gaye, as well as soul grooves and diversions into acid jazz territory. The Psycho Devilles
Atlanta rockabilly act that’s gigged with Unknown Hinson, Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers, Deke Dickerson and Big Sandy, among others. Not as nuts as The Rev. Horton Heat, but plenty hopped-up in their own way. Raleigh’s Hearts & Daggers open with a set of dusty, outlaw country that sounds like Social D playing cowboy songs through Fender Champs. Seven Gates To Elsewhere
Hard-working local original act, drawing on psychedelic British blues and soul from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, as well as adventurous, eclectic modern rock. At times, it seems they’re still trying to decide just what sort of band they’d like to be, but their devotion to pushing their own limitations is laudable.
