Black Tusk has announced that a gathering has been planned for Saturday, November 15, from 4-8 P.M. in Franklin Square to remember musician, carpenter, and friend, Jonathan Athon.

Athon, bassist in Black Tusk and guitarist in Conquer/Devour, passed away on November 9 as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was 32 years old.

The Franklin Square gathering is open to fans, family, friends and “anyone who ever crossed paths with Athon or shared a conversation with him.”

Right next to the square, Ghost Town Tattoo, recently taken over by Brian Warnekros, will be doing memorial tattoos, with proceeds going to offset medical costs. Warnekros opened up shop on Wednesday to offer memorial tattoos, and will also be available on a walk-in only basis Thursday through Friday, 12-8 P.M., in between appointments and other walk-ins. Memorial tattoos are offered for $50, with proceeds going to offset medical costs.

Locals are encouraged to stop by Thursday and Friday for their tattoos, so that out-of-towners may get theirs on Saturday. Depending on requests, an additional day may be added next week.

Close friends filled the shop on Wednesday, choosing from a selection of small pieces, including Black Tusk’s adaptation of Elvis Presley’s TCB design—“TCBT”—and the logo for Athon’s handmade drum company, 13 Star Drums. Black Tusk guitarist Andrew Fidler posted a photo on the band’s page of his freshly tattooed knuckles, bearing Athon’s initials, “JVA.” “I got these here so that we can still play guitar together,” he captioned.

After 8 P.M. on Saturday, close friends and family will gather at The Jinx for a private memorial. After a few hours, The Jinx will be opened to the public.

A memorial fund is being set up, with donations going to help pay for the ongoing medical costs for Emily Boutwell, Athon’s girlfriend who was also in the accident, close friend Jason Statts, and Keith Kozel. All of Athon’s medical expenses have already been taken care of. More information will be released when it becomes available.

Black Tusk also posted on their Facebook page that they are planning a pictorial memorial of Athon and his many accomplishments. Any photos of Athon, things he’s built, or projects he’s worked on can be submitted to ribimal@longbeardelectric.com. Please submit no more than five photos. The band plans to have the project done by Saturday; those submitting are encouraged to send their photos in no later than 8 A.M. on Saturday, November 22. A link will be posted to the collection when it has been assembled.
