Southerners have frequently found their way to Newport, RI. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Newport beckoned southerners seeking cooler and healthier environments, as well as fraternization with a like-minded coastal elite. This lecture introduces some of these trailblazing southerners and shows how they lived and summered.
