Carrie Mae Weems: Sea Island Series

When: Jan. 26-May 6 2018

Considered one of the most influential contemporary artists, Carrie Mae Weems (American, b. 1953) has continued to explore the African American experience throughout her career. Weems became interested in the unique Gullah-Geechee culture found on the Sea Islands off the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina while studying folklore in graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley, and the resultant Sea Islands series made between 1991-1992 comprises black-and-white photographs with lyrical, folkloric texts devoted to Gullah-Geechee communities.
