By City Charter, the Mayor of Savannah holds little actual power. That is, until something really unusual happens, such as the shooting of Charles Smith by a police officer on Augusta Avenue. The ensuing unrest had every possibility of making Savannah another Ferguson, but Mayor Jackson’s calm, soothing presence and total commitment to a peaceful resolution got the community through that extraordinarily difficult time.
