In many cases 'parental failure' occurs because of a lack of education on the parents' part. They could be a product of a long line of such caregivers. Indeed, many of them are. Pregnant teens can't take care of themselves much less a child. 'Child developmental neglect' and mental health issues are a failure in our social service system.
Ah yes, but your neighbor's are someone--an Inn Keeper or a Doctor. They probably grew up in supportive families. They probably didn't go to school hungry. They probably had a jacket to wear in the wintertime.
These same kids that are roaming the streets with guns also 'want to be somebody', but unfortunately they didn't have the supportive people around them. So, if we don't care about the children coming up in ALL sectors of our city, the children that get forgotten are the ones that end up on the streets. As a society we either pay it on the front end with supportive education and job training or we pay it on the back end with incarceration and crime. We pay a MUCH higher price on the back end. The problem as I see it, is that our society as a whole only cares about successful people. We care about our new cars, big homes, manicured lawns, second homes on an island somewhere. We are too busy to deal with the forgotten children. "They aren't our problem", Oh, but they are! "They need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps". What if they don't have any boots??
I have a 1982 Westy diesel. Her name is Miss Adventures. Sometimes she looses one of the s's in her name because she decides to take an adventure that I wasn't planning, like the time she wanted to go visit the Volkswagen dealership in Ontario Canada instead of going further north around Georgian Bay!!
