Less than 48 hours after the shooting, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Violent Crimes investigators have arrested a suspect they believe is responsible for the shooting death of 15-year-old George Akins Jr.

At about 10:50 p.m. on October 21, officers responded to McDonald’s in the 13100 block of Abercorn Street and found Akins suffering from life-threatening injuries. A second 15-year-old male was also injured in the shooting, and was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Akins succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

"Through their diligent efforts over the past two days, investigators determined a verbal altercation took place between two groups of individuals on October 21. Those groups were then involved in a confrontation outside McDonald's that led to the shooting," police say.

Detectives identified a 16-year-old male as a suspect in Akins’s death. He was arrested on October 23 and charged with murder. Additional charges are forthcoming.
