Trees come to Ellis Square

Downtown road closures begin Tuesday

Beginning Monday, April 27, city staff and contractors will begin transplanting five mature live oak trees from the Truman Parkway to the renovated Ellis Square downtown near City Market.

Currently, the 30-foot-tall oaks "interfere with canal maintenance near the Truman," a city spokesman says, adding that the cost of transplantation is "significantly less" than purchasing new trees.

Beginning Monday parking along Ellis Square will be closed.

Road closings and detours are as follows:

5 a.m. Tue. April 28-5 p.m. Wed. April 29: W. Congress Street closed between Jefferson & Whitaker; Barnard Street closed between W. Bryan and W. Broughton. Congress Street detours to Broughton; Barnard detours to Jefferson

5 a.m.-3 p.m. Thu. April 30: W. Bryan Street closed between Whitaker and Jefferson; Barnard St. closed between Bay and W. Congress. Bryan Street detours to Broughton; Barnard detours to Jefferson
