Eric Culberson Blues Band

Les DeMerle Orchestra feat. Bonnie Eisle

Based on Amelia Island, Florida, this well-traveled jazz group plays regularly at the Ritz-Carlton. They’ve also gigged at Caesar’s in Atlantic City, the Westin Plaza Hotel in Singapore and the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida. Wed., 7:30 pm, The Jazz Corner (Hilton Head). *

The Dynamic Duo

The Ex-Lovers

Back after only a few weeks away, this rough-and-tumble alt.rock act from Nashville recalls the boozy, angry basement tapes vibe of Pleased To Meet Me-era Replacements or the glorious disintegration of Big Star’s Sister Lovers – but on the cheap. A mess of Stonesy raunch. Sat., The Jinx.

Trae Gurley's Sinatra

Local thespian who’s found a niche putting his own live spin on Frank’s classics from his big band period, accompanied by pre-recorded instrumental tracks. Thurs., Jazz’d Tapas Bar + Fri., 7 pm, Go Fish. *

Malcom Holcombe

Part of the Savannah Folk Music Society’s First Friday for Folk concert, Holcombe is quite a cult figure, whose spellbinding work has been praised by many of today’s most influential and respected Americana songwriters (see Music Interview). Fri., 7:30 pm, Wesley monumental united Methodist Church (429 Abercorn Street on Calhoun Square).

The Billy Hoffman Trio

Tight and impressive local jazz unit led by the hard-swinging trap drummer Hoffman, who in the past has gigged with everyone from Eric Culberson to Ben Tucker and Howard Paul. Fri., 9 pm, Mercury Lounge. **

Kylesa

The first local show in a while for one of Savannah’s most infamous underground bands. Kylesa is known for a savage and brutal form of hardcore punk that is at times frightening in its bombast and volume. They tour all over the country and are well-known as a noteworthy example of their genre. For this show, they’ll be joined by other well-received Savannah bands Unpersons (also signed to the highly-regarded indie label At A Loss), Two Days of Freedom (formerly known as Roswell - who have just released a seven-inch on local label Hyperrealist) and Chronicle A/D. Kristy Mitchell

Local singer/songwriter mixing covers and originals on acoustic guitar – back after an extended absence from the scene. Thurs., O’Connell’s Irish Pub.

Harry O’Donoghue

Traditional Celtic music from a guitarist/singer best known as the host of Public Radio’s “The Green Island.” Wed. - Sun., Kevin Barry’s.

Park Bench Trio

Athens blues-rock act (with ties to our area) whose style has been compared to that of Gov’t Mule. Sat., Savannah Blues.

Phantom Wingo

The Denny Phillips Band

Versatile party band playing an extremely wide variety of pop and dance hits of the past four decades. Fri. - Sat., The Oyster Bar (Wilmington Island).

Pretty Shady Chicken

Hardworking local jam band (think Phish or middle-period Floyd) that is known for challenging, risky explorations. Sat., 10 pm, Loggerheads (Tybee).

Red Fish Blu Fish

Macon-based alternative rock trio. Sat., 10 pm, O’Connell’s Irish Pub.

Red Moon

Special unplugged acoustic show from this South Carolina jam band whose repertoire draws heavily on reggae influences. Wed., JJ Cagney’s. *

Jeremy Riddle

Sandoor

A bit of an odd booking for this coffeehouse, this Hungarian-born DJ describes his dance music as “spiritual and melodious.” He offers Hard House tracks with African drumming, as well as video projection. With muffins. Thurs., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.

Charlie Sherrill

Longtime house act at this well-known Tybee Island bar, who plays danceable pop music mixed with elements of light jazz, reggae and calypso. He terms this “Tybee Music,” and has released a couple of independent CDs filled with his original tunes celebrating the lazy life of a South Georgia beachcomber. Wed. - Sun., Doc’s Bar (Tybee).

The Skullies

Local hard rock group that straddles the line between modern punk and (egad!) nÜ-metal. I’m pretty sure they hate it when I say that. Sat., The Jinx.

Jan Spillane

Local singer/songwriter who’s known for the personal subject matter of her bluesy and soulful original material. She’s released a couple of albums on her own, as well. Wed., 7 pm, Elysium Wine Bar. *

The Chris Talley Band

Athens-based singer-songwriter (with a strong voice and stage presence) fronting a straight-ahead rock band that’s gaining in local popularity. Fri., O’ Connell’s Irish Pub.

Two Blue

This unusual trio (featuring electric bass, electric guitarist/percussionist and a standout harmonicat) specializes in simple, unvarnished R & B, a la Sonny Boy Williamson or Little Walter. They occasionally throw in a few original tunes or dabble in rock and roll through their own arrangements of numbers by The Rolling Stones and others. But for the most part, this is straight up Chicago streetcorner blues. Thurs., Driftaway Café + Fri. - Sat., 9 pm, Jazz’d Tapas Bar + Sat., 3 pm, City Market Courtyard + Sat., 12 midnight, Malone’s.

Uncle Sam's Medicine Kabinet

Relatively new local acoustic act mixing a number of influences, such as bluegrass, Americana, roots rock and reggae into a laid-back stoner groove that’s heavy on Dylan covers and tossed-off vocals. Thurs., Locos Deli & Pub.

The Jimmy Wolling Band

Local act (featuring Spec Hosti, Tim Burke and Dennis Goldbaugh) offering their own, modern bluegrass takes on country standards, traditionals and originals. Sat., 10 pm, Mercury Lounge.
